Episode 7: Get Help With Body Image & Body Dysmorphia

What does it really mean to feel beautiful in your own skin? In this deeply personal episode of the Get Help Podcast, host Charmaine Chanakira, Afro-Expressionist painter, art psychotherapist and founder of Runako Studio, is joined by four of her closest friends, Tina, Amara, Kiran and Kamal, for an emotional and thought-provoking art therapy session exploring body image, body dysmorphia and self-acceptance. Together, the women open up about their own experiences with appearance, confidence and the pressures placed on women by society. They discuss the impact of social media, the influence of the male gaze, and how culture and family expectations have shaped the way they see themselves and their bodies. This episode goes beyond conversation. Through a guided art therapy exercise, the group is paired up for a powerful creative challenge. Part One: Each woman creates a piece of artwork expressing how she feels about her own body image. Part Two: They create a second artwork inspired by their partner, capturing the beauty and qualities they see in someone else. The final stage of the session brings everyone together to reflect on the artwork, share vulnerable stories and offer heartfelt feedback to one another. The result is a moving exploration of friendship, healing and the importance of seeing ourselves through kinder eyes. This episode highlights the power of art therapy, creative expression and honest conversation as tools for improving mental health and building deeper human connections. If you've ever struggled with body confidence, comparison, self-worth or the pressure to look a certain way, this episode is for you.
